Season 5 is the most recent completed run and, in build terms, the most confident. The challenge list reads like a tour of what the medium does well: a galaxy rebuild, a Great Ball Contraption night that is pure mechanism, a wedding-cake sculpture brief, and licensed themes that push scene-building. By this point the format trusts its teams to attempt harder things, and the ceiling on the builds is visibly higher than season 1.
It aired across summer 2025 with Will Arnett hosting and the established Brickmaster panel. If you are only going to watch one season for the building, this is a strong pick.
The Great Ball Contraption is the purest engineering brief on the show
A Great Ball Contraption, or GBC, is a modular machine whose only job is to move small balls from an input to an output and hand them to the next module. It is a real hobby standard with an agreed interface, and building one to a clock is about as close to pure kinetic engineering as LEGO Masters gets. The teams had to make an unreliable mechanical process reliable under pressure, which is a completely different discipline from making something look good.
What a home builder can take from it is the value of the standard interface. Because every GBC module accepts and delivers balls the same way, builders around the world can chain their modules into one long machine. It is a lovely example of how a shared constraint unlocks creativity rather than limiting it, and it is why Technic-style functional building rewards patience more than flash.
Sculpture briefs are about surface, not skeleton
The cake-sculpture style challenges flip the usual priority. Structure still matters, but the whole game is the outer surface: smooth curves out of angular bricks, believable texture, and colour transitions that hide the seams. The best teams leaned on SNOT building, studs turned sideways and downward, to get surfaces that do not read as a grid. That single technique is the biggest upgrade most intermediate builders can make, and watching it done fast makes it click.
Techniques you can steal
- A shared standard interface, like the GBC ball hand-off, is what lets many small modules become one big machine. Constraints unlock collaboration.
- For smooth or organic shapes, turn to SNOT building, studs facing sideways and down, so the surface stops reading as a grid.
- On any functional build, reliability beats cleverness. Make the boring version work before you make the impressive version.
