It needs builders who are genuinely good, yes, but also a pairing with a watchable dynamic and a team that can build fast enough to finish a real model inside a single day. Plenty of brilliant slow builders would never survive the format, and plenty of watchable pairs get further than their raw skill alone would suggest.
So if you are preparing an application, treat it as two separate problems. Get your building to a genuinely high standard, then, separately, be honest about your speed and your chemistry as a pair. The teams who go far tend to be strong on all three, not exceptional on one.

- Apply as a pair whose partnership is real. The format rewards a watchable, well-drilled duo over two strong strangers.
- Train for speed specifically. Being able to finish a complete, judged model inside a single build day is a separate skill from building well slowly.
