City is the theme people underrate because it does not chase a licence or a display shelf, it just tries to be the most playable box on the aisle. That is exactly why we like benching it: a City set has to earn its keep in a kid's hands, not in a photograph, so the value question is unusually honest. The 2026 line is wider than usual, and it splits cleanly once you have built a few of them.

The clearest split is between the trains and everything else. The Police Train Heist and the Harbor Freight Train ask more of your budget and your table, but they give back a rolling build with real length and a chassis that expects to move, and on the bench they feel like the anchor purchases of the line. The Arctic sub-theme sits just below them, with the Polar Express Train and the Science Lab Truck carrying the bigger part counts and the more involved sub-builds.

Then there is the value tier, and this is where City quietly wins the whole catalogue. The Classic Beach Tram and the Drive-Through Car Wash are small, but they are built from the kind of general plates and tiles that keep working long after the model comes apart, and the Car Wash even hides a genuine moving function in a modest box. If someone tells you piece count is value, hand them a Beach Tram and a same-count licensed shell and let them feel the difference.

The Coast Guard pair is the one to think about hardest. The Rescue Boat and Helicopter set gives you two vehicles and a reason to use both, while the standalone Helicopter is the leaner, cleaner buy for a younger builder.
