Season 3 is the narrative season. With a big field of thirteen teams and a run of story-led briefs, from a dinosaur world to a Marvel challenge to a pirate build, the judging kept rewarding the same thing: a model that reads as a scene rather than a pile of nice parts. For a builder that is the hardest jump to make, from technically clean to actually saying something.
It aired in late 2022 with Will Arnett hosting and the two Brickmasters on the panel. The lessons here are about composition and focus more than raw engineering.
A good diorama has one hero and a lot of restraint
The teams who landed the story briefs almost always did the same thing: they picked a single focal moment and let everything else support it. A clear line of sight to the hero element, a foreground that frames rather than competes, and negative space that gives the eye somewhere to rest. The weaker builds tried to put six ideas on one baseplate and ended up saying nothing.
This is the exact skill that makes a display set feel finished on a shelf. When we score a set's design, a lot of what we are really rating is whether the model has a clear focal point and the discipline to protect it, which is precisely what these challenges drilled.
Colour is information, not decoration
The licensed challenges are a quiet lesson in colour blocking. A recognisable character or scene lives or dies on whether the palette is read correctly from across a room, so teams learned to reserve strong accent colours for the parts that matter and keep the rest neutral. Overuse a bright colour and it stops meaning anything. That restraint is one of the clearest markers of an experienced builder.
Techniques you can steal
- Pick one hero element per scene and build everything else to point at it. A diorama with two focal points has none.
- Leave negative space on purpose. An empty patch of baseplate is what lets the busy part breathe.
- Reserve strong accent colours for the parts that carry meaning and keep the rest neutral, so the palette still reads from across a room.

Nick Della Mora and Stacey Roy won season 3. Their finale build, an Imagination bookshelf, was later put on public display at LEGOLAND New York rather than sold as a retail set. Two teams both fronted by firefighters and a sibling pair filled out the final placings.
