LEGO The Guardian Dragon (71847)

The dragon commands attention. It has genuine size, a strong silhouette and detailing, layered plating, an expressive head, a sweeping tail, that gives it the presence of a proper guardian. The colour scheme is bold and reads clearly across a room, and the whole thing has the kind of drama that a display creature needs. It photographs well and holds a shelf with authority.

The articulation is the feature that keeps it alive. The wings, neck, legs and tail all pose, so you can set it rearing, crouching or in flight, and that flexibility is what stops a display creature from becoming static. There is some action play for a child, the dragon can be swooped and posed, but it leans display over scenario, and it is at its best set in a dramatic pose on a shelf.

The parts are a solid creature-building mix with decent reuse value, and the ratio is fair for the size. It does not have the sheer scale of the largest dragons or a mechanism beyond the posing, but it hits the sweet spot of size, presence and articulation, and the detailing lifts it above the ordinary. As a posable display dragon, it is one of the better mid-flagship Ninjago creatures.
